Get to know Emma
Emmanuela “Emma” Douyon is a social impact consultant, feminist, and advocate for social justice. She is committed to advancing positive social change through research, advocacy, writing, and consulting services for mission-oriented organizations. Emmanuela founded Apwoch, a boutique social impact agency in the US named after the Haitian Creole word for ‘approach. With Apwoch, Emmanuela aims to create customized, research-based solutions that address the tough challenges that communities, citizens, and organizations face while being inclusive and tuned to the needs and aspirations of those affected.
Emmanuela is also the founder and former Executive Director of POLICITÉ, a Haiti-based consulting firm that doubles as an emerging think-and-do tank specializing in development policy. Policite is a testament to her commitment to fostering economic and social development through a grounded understanding of the socio-cultural and historical landscapes. POLICITÉ aims to leverage the insights of local professionals to address pressing issues with locally resonant strategies. Emmanuela has contributed to strategic leadership, project management, monitoring & evaluation, communication, research, policy development, and advocacy across various sectors for organizations in Haiti and the United States.
As a former member of the Collective NOUPAPDOMI, she was one of the leading figures in the anti-corruption movement, Petrochallenge, that mobilized hundreds of thousands of Haitians, calling for accountability in Haiti’s largest corruption scandal. Emmanuela is known for evidence-based analysis of Haiti’s political and economic situation and has published several opinion pieces and appeared in local and international media, including CNN, Al Jazeera, and BBC. She has provided briefings and recommendations to the United Nations, World Bank, Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH), US Congress, embassies, and international non-governmental organizations (INGOs).
Emmanuela earned a Master’s in Development Studies from Paris 1 Pantheon Sorbonne in France, a Master’s in Applied Economics, and a BA in Economics from National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan. She speaks English, French, Haitian Creole, Intermediate Mandarin, and Spanish. She has lived in four countries and traveled to several others, equipping her with a unique ability to navigate diverse cultural and professional landscapes. Emmanuela is a feminist, public speaker, and op-ed writer.
Due to safety concerns, Emmanuela was forced to leave Haiti and relocate to the United States in 2021. She remains committed to promoting economic and social justice despite leaving her homeland. She works with local non-profit organizations in Massachusetts to help food-insecure and underserved communities while standing in solidarity with people and organizations promoting social justice and sustainable development worldwide. Emmanuela is eager to collaborate with organizations, corporations, and individuals on social impact programs and Corporate Social Responsibility Initiatives that align with her values and vision.
